Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Posted by on June 13, 2007

So tonight is chapers 7 and 8. We’ve been doing two a night and they are anxiously waiting the next installment. I’ve tried chapter books at various times and they’ve never been that intereted. D and C are loving this. They beg, beeeeg, BEG for just a few more chapters each night. But I remember having Charlotte’s Web read to us in 1st grade, one chapter per day. And I remember waiting, wanting to know, becoming probably more facinated by the wait. Last night we got to the idea of the golden tickets and read about the first two winners. D was literally hopping up and down on his knees on the bed chanting, “He’s gonna get one! He’s gonna get one!” So two chapters a night (they are really short) and the excitement builds.

I’ve tried Stuart Little, Alice in Wonderland (while crazy and hard to follow was one we stuck with the longest), and The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander. D did listen to all of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone but then only made it through two chapters of the second book, which I was actually sort of grateful for. They get successively more scary rather quickly. He also like the Magic Treehouse series; I like the history and geography in them but they aren’t really much of a chapter book. The boys are asking for Peter Pan and Wendy (the actual novel of Peter Pan) but I think it might be a little hard to follow. So other than trying the previously unsuccessful chapter books, what’s next?

I just bought the Borrowers for my 9 year old. I loved that book as a kid. I bet the little ones would enjoy it too.

Thanks. We’ll have to check that out. We went to the library and they picked Charlotte’s Web for the next book after Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But I’ll try The Borrowers next; I read the blurb on Amazon and it looks really cute.
