Vacation Day 2

August 22nd, 2007 · No Comments

Maritime Aquarium

We planned to head into New York today, do the tourist thing. Took forever to get the kids going and then with one thing and another it was 2 pm before we left the house. So we decided to go to the Maritime Center. Kids had a blast. We learned about seals and got to touch manta rays. We talked to the volunteer about, and got to touch, horseshoe crabs, rock crabs and several kinds I can’t remember. We watched them feed seals and spent a lot of time watching the river otters play. We talked a lot, we walked a lot and in general we had fun. I had the epiphany while we were there that this is the equivalent of the Desert Botanical Gardens. It isn’t just an aquarium of marine animals from around the world, it is animals that live in the Long Island Sound and the rivers of Connecticut.

I have a few photos done tonight and many more to go through so the gallery for this day will grow (gallery is up). Tomorrow we’re hopefully off to the Natural History Museum in Manhattan.
