Mama’s Getting Schooled

Posted by on February 10, 2008

Riding in the back of a taxi in Cancun, Mexico in December, we discussed the idea of new year’s resolutions with D (C and B were in a separate taxi with aunt Lizzie and Uncle Tom).  D said he wanted to learn to read this year. Pretty good goal. Daddy is trying to give up coke. [Liquid cola-flavored soda made with unhealthful corn syrup contrary to how it sound standing in line at the grocery store when the children loudly announce that daddy is addicted to coke and he's tried to quit because it's so bad for him, but addictions are hard to break. Yikes!] When I said that I didn’t know what I’d want for a goal with year, D said I should become an author. He pointed out that I like telling them stories and I should start writing them down. It was actually a brilliant idea from our 7 yo. I used to write, years and years ago. But, other than grocery lists and quicky stream-of-consciousness blog entries, haven’t written in a long time.

There is a local class called Mother’s Who Write that I have though of taking from time to time. Inspired by our 7 yo, I decided to look it up. Still doing my usual slowly thinking while time passes, I received an email from a friend who’s taken the class that there were only two spaces left and it actually spurred me on to registering. So I am taking a class – with homework at everything – starting next month.

Part of wanting your children to learn all the time and have lives filled with inspiration is being willing to do so yourself. I may need reminding when faced with homework, but I’ll have several little people to keep me on track :)
