Wednesday Was The Zoo

Posted by on February 25, 2008

Yaw! Yaw!

To follow up on my sampler I’m evidently stitching in my head (Tuesday was library day, Wednesday was the zoo), we finally did get to a field trip. We headed to the zoo on Wednesday morning planning on a quick visit before C’s 1 o’clock gymnasticsPuppet Show class. As soon as we entered we saw a little sign set over to the side that said there were puppet shows going on every 30 minutes. We’d never seen the sign before and decided to follow the winding path through some administration building into a small room where volunteers put on a puppet show. It started with a rousing rendition of Old McDonald Had A Farm with the kids singing the animals sounds and proceeding to have various farm animals come out and talk to the kids and ask what sound it makes.

Seeing the puppet show, which we’d never noticed a sign for before, seemed to unlock a magic door to a zoo we’ve had a membership at since we moved here. The kids decided to see the petting zoo because of the farm animal puppets. We’ve only been once or twice when we first moved here. Quite Wallabyshonestly, I’d forgotten about it until our last trip with friends when they mentioned it. Well heading to the zoo we wandered down path we’d literally never seen. Three years at the zoo and we’d somehow just never meandered there. Sticking to the big paths and larger animals, we’d missed the wallabies and the children’s path with a small waterfall and a little playground.

Brushing A Goat?We finally managed to over to the petting zoo. On the way into the goat enclosure, they had a bin of hairbrushes. I’m not sure if we missed it before or if it’s new. Kids thought it was very fun to follow the goats around waiting for one to stand still long enough to brush. After some time with the goats, we wondered around the tractors and wagons. While there are other animals in the farm area, it is imperative that we see the sting rays (when told they’re going to the zoo, the actual battle cry is, “STING RAYS!”).

So sting ray time. Basically it involves lots of time spent with their hands in the water waiting for a sting ray to glide by and brush against their hand. Kids love it though. Great start to a day that still had gymnastics and a park playday to go.

Looks like fun! Up here where we live (Alberta) we can only dream of being at the zoo in short sleeves, and we have a vague memory of what trees look like with leaves on them.

But, alas, spring is just around the corner (crossing my fingers)

My comments seemed to have disappeared from about mid-January until today when I reloaded my theme for my blog.

Maria, you may not wear short sleeves in February but you probably don’t have excessive heat warnings in June. Our low was 79 today; our high 110. ah, Canada sounds lovely right about now.
