The Farm & As the World Turns

February 29th, 2008 · No Comments

D has his one day of school today so only the little two were home. There was an event on permiculture
going on at the Farm at South Mountain and Friday was kids day. Thought we’d go have lunch and then check it out. Kids had fun at lunch; some people we know showed up as well and all the kids played tag under the trees and between the picnic tables.

There was supposed to be stuff for the kids to see and do - learning about gardening, composting, etc, and a wild child class for the parents, but mainly it was just the grown-ups talking. Kids really weren’t very interested. Oh well, we tried and the kids really enjoyed playing tag during lunch.

D, on the other hand, did learn something big today. At Casa Vida they discussed leap year. He knew it was a rare thing but then we go in to the explanation of why leap years exist - the astronomical reasoning behind it. The idea that a it takes 24 hours for the earth to rotate and we call that a day. That it takes 365 days for the earth to go around the sun. But then there is that little extra - and if enough years go by with the little extra the calendar would say it was mid-summer and places might have snow. So we adjust the calendar every four years. Probably a lot of adults don’t take the time to think about why a day is a day.
