Happy Solstice.

June 21st, 2008 · 3 Comments

It’s 101 degrees at 10:40 PM. Today was an inside kind of day. We’ve been trying to start getting ready to go on our trip; one week to go and we’ve yet to start packing. Getting ready is more like getting caught up on laundry, getting the house ready for someone to house sit and finishing up with work.  We still need to figure out what to take, make suer we’ve got it all, pack for five people for five weeks. Usually on the solstices and equinoxes we get seasonally appropriate things for the kids - sunglasses and flip flops for summer, kites for autumn, funky hats and sleds for winter, bubbles and sidewalk chalk for spring. This year daddy was in charge of gifts and it turned into Indiana Jones legos, the Very Hungry Caterpillar board game and new games for the C and B’s Leapsters and D’s $7-away-from-saving-enough-allowance-to-buy nintendo ds. With a road trip coming and temps outrageous even for here, I guess inside activities makes sense.

So the boys spent the day legoing and playing on C’s leapster (D gave his to B since she wanted one and he’s hoping to save enough for a ds). The also spent a while playing in the hose in the yard and watched a bit of Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire. B went home with grandma for a sleepover. She had a wonderful time with us in California but she wanted a to spend the night with grandma and papa too. We’ll have to find out what she did this weekend when she comes home.

B wanted to have the same sleepover experience that her brothers had so we did do some of the same things. Began by having lunch with our special friend Peter. He was working so we picked up lunch and met him at the hospital. B met one of my co-workers that she had never seen before. She was totally unfazed by the fact that he is 6′6″ and built like an NFL linebacker and he was totally enchanted. When she offered her hand to shake, his hand enfulfed her arm past the elbow. She was all smiles telling him all about her “big girl sleepover” and he looked afraid to touch her - a gentle giant. He remarked later that he had never heard a child talk like that and he just loved her name. When we arrived home we made banana bread and she took a loaf to our neighbors - just like her boys did. She was offered the honor of walking their little bichon frize, a sweet little thing who weighs all of about 8 pounds. B took the responsibility very seriously and the sight of the two of them prancing along was precious. She kept reminding me that she could do it herself so I was well aware that even though I was walking along side my assistance was not needed. We did our usual hair, manicure, pedicure, perfume which always makes me very nostalgic remembering doing that with her Mommy. We set up the tent in our bedroom but she decided that she was not used to sleeping in a tent and she would be more comfortable (her words) sleeping in a bed.

Day 2 we played dolls with Kayla, she helped do laundry, read stories, Play Doh, just had fun and waited for Daddy and the boys to come. C decided that he would stay over and since her big brother was there we slept in the tent. With the windows open, crickets chirping and owls hooting it was almost an outdoor experience. The only thing missing was coyotes howling but we had no full moon so me missed that part. The next morning we headed home so that I would be there the next morning so Daddy could help Mommy with her preparations for the book show. A short sleepover for B but it was her first one alone and overall was a big success. Everyone wants their own individual sleepover after vacation, we can’t wait.
