We took off for our month long road trip this morning. Not quite like a herd of turtles but no early AM leaving either. The kids were so excited they skipped breakfast and sat in the car while we finished loading it and putting all the bikes on the carrier. Before we hit Tucson they were starving so we stopped for a very early lunch.
The boys played with new legos grandma got them for the trip while B colored. We brought some movies but far more burned dvds of tv shows. In between playing, they watched a few episodes. We stopped for snacks somewhere in New Mexico. Normally we talk in the car but they were all pretty absorbed - most especially D who finally saved up enough for his nintendo ds. We stopped in El Paso for a cord to play the ipods in the car; so far it’s the only thing we’ve discovered we’re missing, so not too bad. We ate dinner in El Paso too. I’d forgotten how near the border it is; it’s too bad we didn’t have our passports. The kids would have loved to cross over into Mexico for dinner. Although Arizona is a border state, they’ve only flown to Mexico.
It was deemed to early too stop. In hindsight we should have. We thought if it got too late we’d stop between El Paso and the town of Carlsbad, which is past the caverns. There is nothing between El Paso and Carlsbad. Nothing. Thankfully we had enough gas. Having finally gotten the ipod cord we listened to stories for the rest of the drive. We’re hoping to read a little about each state we pass through, get the kids to journal about each day and have enough time to swim and play a little. Tonight, however, we pulled into the hotel with two sleeping children and one not far behind.
Tomorrow - Carlsbad Caverns
