First Day of School

I remember school starting in the beginning of September. Or, if you are Harry Potter 1st September. But Arizona schoolsGetting Up In The World now start from the end of July to the middle of August. Yes, when it’s hot. Actually, HOT. How does this affect the homeschoolers? The boys are both going to Casa Vida this year. It’s a once a week homeschool enrichment program offering music, art, pe, computers and a little classroom time. D has always enjoyed recess and pe the most :) We weren’t sure how C would do away from us all day. He’s shyer than his brother and hasn’t really enjoyed classes.

Line Up For ClassLast year we carpooled, but for the first day of school we wanted to drop them off ourselves. C had been extremely shy at the Meet The Teacher night but was very enthusiastic at drop off. We got there early – a rarity for us – and they had time to play on the playground before going it. C will be in the K-1 class and D in the 2-3 class but they’ll see each other at lunch and recess.

Concentration After dropping them off we took B to pick up paint. “Why is it a Home? Why is it a Depot?” We pick up a bright light blue for our kitchen. The previous color (called baby turtle – it was the greenish brown of a turtle shell) was pretty but way to dark in a room with darkish wood cabinets and the windows are under a deep overhanging porch. So brighter, lighter was the order of the day.

B was very excited to paint. We tried to keepB Gets The Brush Ready To Paint her to turning the green to blue but she liked repainting with her brush over the roller. Oh well, it’ll need a second coat anyway and she was thrilled. She stuck with it for almost the entire room too.

We went to pick the boys up from Casa Vida hoping they’d had a good time. C was so excited we could barely understand him. Grinning ear to ear and talking a mile a minute, he told us about his day. D was much more laid back. We couldn’t tell if he didn’t have as much fun or it was just old hat to him. The boys were very surprised when they came home to find the room such a different color. They immediately hopped in to add a second coat. We’re hoping to get it done and go pick up a second hand hutch or buffet. Bringing back the UHaul of our old stuff from Connecticut has really emphasized the lack of storage in our kitchen.

Grandma came down for the night and took everyone out to celebrate the first day of Casa Vida.
