Measuring Up

Charting

Today we started with some books I picked up a few days ago. We’ve been selling books back to the used bookstore, so I bought The Grapes of Math and the Math Curse with some of the credit. After figuring our how many quarts in a gallon, pints in a quart, etc, it asked how many inches in a foot. So we got out a ruler. We got them all to holding the rule up against their feet, giggling, that a foot should be a foot. So we measured everyone’s feet and charted the results. Then they decided they wanted to measure heads. Since all of the results were pretty similar in inches, we switched to centimeters. We talked about using the chart - rather than the measurements we know - to figure out who was biggest or smallest. Not a bad amount of math accomplished before the end of breakfast.

Color Change Then the boys decided to play some computer games like Reader Rabbit, while we started to paint B’s room. It was originally painted when we bought the house and she was only 2 months old. It was a sagey green with a carnation pink stripe. She never chose it so I totally understand her desire, now that she is a big girl, to remake her room in her own image . . . which means a princess room. I had been noticing things to redo her room for a while and trying to remember where they all were. Today we decided just to go for it. So new flower rug, sparkley flower painting, new curtains, and pink paint. She sent me for the paint. Do you know how many shades that qualify as pink actually exist? I figured I was on the right track though when the swatch I chose had colors named Ballerina Gown, Poetic Princess and Palace Rose. One call to daddy to show her the multi-pink tutu and ask light, medium or dark for her walls and we had a winner: Poetic Princess. And that was before she heard the name.

We managed to paint about half the room before daddy took the boys and some friends to see the new Star Wars movie. It got about 3 thumbs up from our crew. Must have been great. Tomorrow we’ll finish painting.
