Is It Organic?

Whole Foods Store Tour

Today was field trip day and one of the moms from our home school group organized a trip to Whole Foods market. We are always happy to see some of our friends and to getting to explore new places always makes it more interesting. We had two tour guides that were glad to see so many excited kids, little did they know that the home school kids are not afraid to call out the answers to any questions. Our tour guides started by guiding us over to the produce section. Where they posed some difficult questions: What is produce? What is organic? and who loves Broccoli? They thought they could stump us. Ha, ha we were ready for them. Someone from the group yelled out vegetables are produce, organic means no pesticides and D loves broccoli. After a short discussion about what certain fruits and and vegetables look like, we headed over to the fish department. We got an up-close view of a rock crab. It was pink because it was already cooked and ready for dinner. The group had some mixed feelings about touching the crab. Some wanted to reach out and grab it and others felt it was better to look from afar. The meat department was a short walk from the fish. So we ambled in that direction. Next we were told about how Whole Foods Market uses organic free range chicken - again some yelled out that means no hormones and the chickens don’t live in cages. We got a real treat when he showed us a couple of frozen chicken’s feet.

On the cooking front, we finally made the Django Dirt Cake from the What’s Cooking? cook book. I’d had to wander the store to find all the ingredients - we usually don’t buy fudge cookies, wafer cookies or gummy worms. But the kids had a great time measuring, stirring and certainly crushing the cookies to decorate. The best, however, was eating the gloopy, gloppy mess.
