Secondhand Lions

October 15th, 2008 · No Comments

From “What’s secondhand?” to “what’s a will?”, the movie Secondhand Lions took the boys and I about 2.5 hours to watch Wednesday. I’ve never watched a movie holding the remote to pause every few seconds and answer questions. B is at grandma’s for a big girl sleepover and daddy was out leaving the boys and I alone. They asked to watch a big kid movie. Which left me perusing the shelves. Their usual choice of big kid movie is anything Star Wars or Indian Jones.

Everyone should see this movie, if for no other reason that to appreciate the idea behind unschooling. In a short while Walter learns about the world because his two great uncles believe in living life to the fullest. Want a garden? Plant one. Want to learn to build a plane, grab a book and start tinkering. Keep a lion? Well maybe no that one. But nothing is off limits in the story and I’m quite sure he has experiences he never imagined. Normally I wouldn’t consider taking so much time to watch a movie. Normally I might consider so many questions a sign that the movie is too complex for their level of development. But they were facinated and somehow this time, it didn’t bother me at all to pause, question, answer, consider, explain and enjoy.
