We’ve been quiet. Kids went to grandma and papas for 5 days. Yes five days! We cleaned a little, painted a little and event did dinner with childless friends. Grandma just sent this:
Five very full days of non-stop activity and yet I had to really concentrate to remember just what we did to occupy that time, but here goes.
We started out on Sat. with breakfast at Denny’s, which has become a traditional start to sleepovers. D couldn’t wake up so we got his to go. Packed up and headed North. When we arrived the new wii games were here-wii Music and Legos Star Wars. Silly Grandma, we were armed with light sabers only to discover that this was not a light saber compatible game. The boys were delighted with it anyway and wanted to play every moment until I had to place a time limit. wii Music was a lot of fun, we all performed, switching instruments, doing solos, faster, slower, louder, softer all at D’s direction. We made the recordings and designed the album covers which took longer than the performance. In between we set up the tent on the back deck. The two man tent which was big enough for the four of us last year is now too small, C grew tired of the cramped space and went in the house to Papa.
Sunday was more wii, building a huge Legos Star Wars contraption, playing dolls and generally enjoying the play room in the converted attic. I did a lot of cooking preparing for the granite counter install that was starting on Mon. Cooked two lbs. of pasta, brown rice, a pound of bacon, a pound of sausage, a dozen eggs, Papa made burgers and pasta sauce.
Mon. morning the tile man came and removed the stove and sink. With all our preparations and paper plates and bowls we got along quite well. Still had the use of the microwave and oven and the laundry room vat sink.
Were doing fine until Tues. when we ran out of pasta but went to the neighbors and made another pound. All in all, lack of a working kitchen was only a minor inconvenience-burgers and pasta and chocolate ice cream-who could want for more. Tues. we went on a butterfly hunt with the new nets, a gift from the neighbor lady. No butterflies were harmed or caught but it was like a Keystone Kops routine. I was weak with laughter as they raced, jumped and flailed about with their nets. We trudged back home and dunked out heads in the hose outside. The previous evening it had rained and they went outside to play in the rain, only AZ kids are so excited by rain. Between rain and hoses there was a lot of muddy shoes and wet clothes, but it was fun. They decided that since the tent was too small for all of us we should set it up in our bedroom so I could sleep in the bed and they could sleep in the tent. Great idea, everyone was comfy, especially since one night sleeping on the deck is enough for me.
Spent our days eating, playing, eating, playing. Probably the most exciting event was the ebay “betting†on 20 lbs. of Bionicle parts for C. He loves to use the Lego pieces to make up his own creations and wished that he had Bionicle parts to use. We looked at ebay and found the assorted lot. We spent a very tense 26 hours waiting for the auction to end, checking every few minutes, until we told him we could only check once and hour. Papa was manning the computer and placed a last minute bid to win. Hooray, but of course, the next question was “When will they be here?†B was the star wii bowler once again, bowling strikes with her right hand for herself and with her left for her brother who went to check the “betting†with his brother.
I cannot say that we are not tired, we are grandparents after all, but we had a wonderful time and hope that they will have good memories of their times with us and that they can remember all of the things that we did even though I can’t.
