Gecky

Gecky

Last night I saw a streak run past and thought there was a bug in the house. Then I saw a little itty bitty tail stick out of the corner. Gecko. Little one. I went to get the kids to show them before we took it outside. Daddy caught it which led to the discussion of how they’ve always wanted a terrarium. So the gecko ended up in a bug catching kit overnight. This morning the kids had added a stick and some leaves and decided his or her name was Gecky. We finally moved him a larger tupperware and put plastic wrap over the top with holes for air. If you look in the photo - the white and blue thing? that’s a bottle cap. That’s how little he is.

Baby GeckoThen we went on Craig’s List to try to find an small tank and headed to the pet store for food. I had looked online where it said they ate flies, worms and occassionally small bits of fruit. Did I get to buy dried meal worms? Nooooo. The person working at the store had to come tell me house geckos only eat live food. And since ours was too small for crickets, I had to buy fruit flies. Because I really want fruit flies in the house.  Last time I worked with fruit flies was AP Biology and I remember them getting all over the classroom. So with fruit flies, sand, rawhides for the dog, and two pamphlets about geckos to read, we came back home.

Now we’re waiting to hear back from someone with a terrarium for sale on Craig’s List. He texted me the measurements but not an address to come buy it. Hopefully we’ll hear soon so we can go buy it and move Gecky out of the tupperware.

He sure is cute. Remembering that they hand carried a pill bug home from here, named it “Pilly” and built a habitat for it in their back yard- Gecky seems like the logical next step.
