Settling In For Autumn

August 23rd, 2009 · 1 Comment

It’s August and schools are kicking back into session here. August. It’s crazy. A few of the districts go back at the end of July. Even though we’re homeschooling school schedules affect us. The enrichment program the boys are in is run through a public school district and keeps to their calendar, so it’s back to (two day a week) school for us too.

B has never really had interest in classes. We’ve tried dance and art and swimming. She’d rather hang out at home with us. When she found out two of her friends were going to the same program as her brother she decided she wanted to go to kindergarten with them. She was very excited and we had her registered and then the state legislature decided they wouldn’t pay for students that didn’t make the Sept 1 birthday cutoff. Uggh.

So then we spent about two months trying to find a two-day a week preschool class for 4 yos. It was actually very difficult; by 4 most classes are daily. Two weeks ago Monday, we found a school that had 2, 3 and 5 day options starting that week. It was very whirlwind to find it, take a tour and have her start the next day. After one week she seriously contemplated moving from the 4-5 yo preschool class to the private kindergarten, which doesn’t have to meet state age limits, but decided she didn’t want to go 5 days a week. She’s really enjoying it though.

C is in 1st grade two days a week and having a lot of fun. Last year I got every detail out of him but this year he tends to not say much. Maybe I’ll get more as time goes by.

B started 3rd grade this year and that’s the first year they either get to go to a regular classroom or chose their own classes. He’s taking Turning Points in History, Renaissance Math, Spanish, Chess, Photoshop Elements and Living Green. He’s really enjoying changing classes, new teachers every hour and seems to like the classes themselves a lot.

So we’re getting used to getting up and dressed and fed and ready two days a week. Now we just need to shuffled around groups and clubs and classes and parks and field trips to MWF. We’ll get there.
