Little Lessons Everywhere

Posted by on September 19, 2009

We were listening to the Superhero playlist on my ipod in the car. It’s still pretty small; I definitely need to add to it. About five songs in we get to the Jimmy Olsen’s Blues by The Spin Doctors. They’ve heard the list many times but they decided to start discussing lyrics today. Really there are vocabulary and imagery lessons everywhere. So we did we talk about based on a short song? What does the color blue represent? (We’ve talked about colors during the book Pinkalicious when someone is green with envy.) What are ‘the blues’? What’s a journalist? What’s a dilemma? Did they know why the image of Lois and Clark in a telephone booth is used? What does Jimmy Olsen want a pocket full of kryptonite? Do girls really want superheros or regular guys? Do guys want superheros or regular girls?

Lyrics, books, TV shows, movies, art, discussions…little things to delve into are all around us.
