Last year was the first time I came across some of the numerous online reading challenges that exist. It was mid-year and they were all underway so I just let it drift on by. But now it’s a new year. Fresh start. More books ;)
There are more challenges than I can easily find. Some are by sheer volume, others by topic, genre or variety. The kids think I should sign up for all of them, because according to them I read more than anyone. Now there was a time the 150 books in a year challenge would not have been the least bit challenging…but that was three kids ago. So I’m trying to decide between things like historical fiction versus revisiting – or finally getting to some of – the classics, eclectic variety versus A-Z by author’s last name.
What I’m really looking for is some for the kids. Most I’ve found start at older YA. If I can’t find any in the next day or two then I think we’re going to make our own or adapt some of the adult challenges. We’re thinking of trying for a specific number of Caldecott or Newberry award winners, or commonly banned books. Another idea was a book a month from different genres to expand what we read. Then with younger children, we’re trying to decide about having a read-it-myself list and/or a read-to-me list. One, the other, both? If we’re making it up, we can do what we want. So tomorrow we’ll sit down and see if we can come up with some challenges for me to accept, and either find some for the kids or create some – flexible – rules for our own. Because reading is supposed to be fun.
